We spent the day on Fraser Island, a World Heritage Site. It’s 73 miles long and has a rainforest in the middle. We rented a 4WD car and took the ferry across to the island. When we arrived we drained some of the air out of our tires so we could drive around the roads here. Well, not exactly roads, it was more like paths of sand which is why everyone needs a 4WD car to get around. It’s very bumpy and there were special pull-over areas in case there was a car coming in the other direction. After 30 minutes going 8 miles at 15 miles an hour we made it to Lake McKenzie. The sand was hot and white. We walked to the beach and after finding a shady spot ran into the water. The lake is filled entirely by rainwater and on the bottom of the super deep areas there are compressed eucalyptus leaves to keep the water from draining. The water in the shallow area is super clear and fine. If you dig underwater you would find…
…more sand. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world.
We took a break for lunch and ate in one of the fenced-in picnic areas that keeps dingoes away. When we got back in the car we drove another half-hour to a cafe and then we drove on the beach! We drove through water and over bumps and it started raining. We flew the drone, but then we had to go back to make the ferry. Paula hosed off the car to get rid of the sand, and dad drove the car along a dock to get on the ferry. Once back on the mainland we stopped to have dinner at a beachside restaurant. Then we drove two hours to drop off the car at the airport and pick up the other one and drive back home.
