Bargara, Queensland

Soooo we made a big change in the itinerary of our trip. This caused much confusion and delay… not really, but it did involve a lot of scrambling at the last moment. We were originally set to fly from Melbourne to Tasmania on Tuesday and decided to switch things up. I won’t bore you with all the details. I may be boring you enough already.

Bargara is probably a name with which you are unfamiliar. I certainly was. It’s an unassuming little beach town in Queensland and a perfect place for some R&R at the Zen Beach Retreat. You are probably saying, “why would you people need some R&R?” and that’s a fair point.

Anyways – our first evening we watched loggerhead turtles hatch at Mon Repos beach and begin their challenging journey to the ocean where they will spend the next 30 years cruising the East Australian Current.  They face much adversity during this time. Animals might swipe the babies as they make their way to the ocean, fishermen can catch them in nets as they travel the EAC, and the turtles may consume plastics floating in the water.  This ancient creature is important to the ocean ecosystem and needs protection. As the turtle goes so goes the world.

The kids definitely appreciated the long, relaxing stay.  We had one excursion while there to Fraser Island, which Ben will fill you in on. We also visited a reptile zoo that had koalas and kangaroos.  The rest of our time was spent on the beach, in the pool, exploring the town and keeping it slow.  We even got in an awesome surf lesson.  The kids had a blast scootering around, getting lunch on their own in town, and exploring with the 11 year old, Charlie, who lives here.  A break from your parents is nice.
